Partner

Ian is an accomplished litigator and trusted advisor who represents businesses and individuals in their most important disputes and helps them resolve their most complex problems.

Ian has represented a wide range of clients, including financial services firms, pharmaceutical and medical device companies, ratings agencies, hedge funds, insurance companies, media companies, law and accounting firms, corporate executives, world-renowned artists, and individuals. His practice spans matters arising under federal securities laws; state contract, fiduciary, privacy, and tort law; federal and state false claims statutes; Food and Drug Administration regulations; the Visual Artists’ Rights Act; the Trust Indenture Act; federal civil rights laws; and state post-conviction laws.

Ian has extensive experience litigating high-stakes disputes in federal and state trial and appellate courts, as well as in arbitration. He has successfully resolved complex, long-running matters, including bringing a favorable end—within less than a year—to a decades-long dispute between money managers and former clients that had been litigated across multiple courts in three states. He has also represented senior executives in significant class action and indemnification disputes, achieving favorable outcomes.

Earlier in his career, Ian litigated for many years at leading law firms, where he played key roles in major trials and settlements. His experience includes defending a public company at trial in a multibillion-dollar merger dispute and leading a trial team in a high-profile dispute involving an internationally renowned artist, which resolved on favorable terms after opening statements.

Ian also brings substantial appellate experience, having briefed and argued winning appeals in federal and state appellate courts, including the California Court of Appeal, the New York Appellate Division, and the United States Court of Appeals.

While prepared to litigate cases through trial and appeal, Ian is keenly focused on achieving efficient and practical outcomes. He provides clear-eyed assessments, candid advice, and strategic negotiation designed to resolve disputes before litigation—or minimize its cost and disruption when litigation is unavoidable.

Outside the office, Ian is an active member of his community and serves in leadership and fiduciary roles for several educational and nonprofit organizations, including Camp Ramah in the Berkshires and The Leffell School.
